Description

Toolwiz Smart Defrag is a free disk defragmentation tool designed for maximum hard drive performance. Based on the full use of the undocumented NTFS parsing algorithm and direct analysis without using the file system, it is 10 times faster than the Windows’ native defrag. It can analyze quite a large sum of discontinuous files in the disk within just a few seconds, through physically organizing the contents of the mass storage device and storing files into the smallest number of contiguous regions.

Toolwiz Smart Defrag is created with the world's leading defragmentation level, not only providing the function of defragmentation like any typical disk defragmenter, but also attempting to create broader free space by means of compaction to impede the recovery of fragmented files. Besides the recovery prevention, it is also equipped with an intelligent engine to prepare sufficient space for future use, which can efficiently avoid the generation of new fragments.

Defragging the hard drive is an integral part of PC system maintenance. Regular defragging can ensure that all parts of each file are stored together so that to improve system performance and make it faster to access each file. Toolwiz Smart Defrag is a preferential Defragmentation Software that optimizes and reorganizes the files on your hard drive to maximize the performance of your Windows PC. It is very user-friendly and multifunctional. What’s more, it is totally free to both internal and external users.

Toolwiz Smart Defrag is also embodied in our another all-in-one product ToolWiz Care.

Features
Quick Analysis and Defragmentation

Based on the full use of the undocumented NTFS parsing algorithm and direct analysis without using the file system, Toolwiz Smart Defrag quickly puts plenty of discontinuous files into the continuous space in the disk. It can analyze quite a large sum of discontinuous files in the disk within just a few seconds, through physically organizing the contents of the mass storage device and storing files into the smallest number of contiguous regions.

Plain and Intuitive Interface

Defragmentation itself is a fairly complicated process. For fear that you have no idea of how to operate it, we have exerted our efforts to design a straightforward and simple interface for you and conceal all the other complex programs. Now, unfolded in front of you is an interface with just three buttons: Analyze Now, Defrag Now&Stop, and general information about four disks C/D/E/F.

Unused Data Intelligent Placement

ZIP/RAR files and archived data that you never use now have a specific place on your hard drive - the invisible unused areas,which makes way for the optimum performance of the files you want badly. Since these files are placed out of the way, it is virtually the same effect as those files are not even on your drive at all. Remember the performance when your drive without any data on? Now you have that same performance back again!

Consolidation of Free Disk Space

Toolwiz Smart Defrag not only merges scattered file fragments, but it is also equipped with an intelligent engine to repositions unused space on your hard disk to form a contiguous block and prepare sufficient space for future use, which can efficiently help prevent the generation of new fragmented files. In addition, it also creates broader free space by means of compaction to impede the recovery of fragmented files.

F A Q

"What is "fragmenting?"

Imagine a large library of books arranged in volumes. Also imagine that the librarian for this particular library re-shelves the books in a way which moves the individual books in the volumes further apart from each other. As more books are added to library, the further apart and more mixed up the books in the volumes become. Now imagine that you come to the library and want to check out an entire volume of books. You would have to search all over the library to find each individual book in the volume that you want. In computer terms, what is happening when the individual books are re-shelved in this way is called fragmenting, and this is what happens to your computer as you install programs, download files, or just use your computer in general.

"why do I need to "defragment" my hard drive?"

When running programs that contains hundreds of files, fragmenting can degrade the performance of your computer. As the clusters of files on your hard drive become fragmented, they grow further apart and it takes longer for your computer to find and assemble all the pieces necessary to run the programs. This is where defragmenting comes in. It rearranges the files on your hard drive so they are back in order, which cuts down on access latency (the time it takes to access your files). It is as if the library has hired a new librarian who goes through and arranges the books so that the volumes are intact and contiguous. This would greatly reduce the time it takes to find whole volumes or individual books in those volumes.

"How to operate?"

The interface design is probably the simplest for any Windows defragmenting software. After executing the application, the interface opens. It’s a plain dialog box which lists all your hard drives and has two additional tabs. There is only one option of analyzing any hard drive that you may select. You can select multiple hard drives and analyze them simultaneously.
The process of analyzing occurs within seconds of clicking the tab. There is an option of stopping the process. After getting with the analysis you can defragment the files. The process takes a little longer time, as files need to be rectified and put up in continuous memory segments.

"How to install?"

1: Dowload a Setup program;
2: Double-click it. A prompt will pop up to remind you to install Toolwiz Smart Defrag on your computer. It is recommended that you’d better close all other applications before continuing. After you end all other application programs, you can click the Next button to continue;
3: There is a Browse button for you to choose the folder in which you would like to install Toolwiz Smart Defrag; If you don’t bother to choose, it will be automatically installed in the Program File folder of your C drive. Click Next to continue;
4: Next is the information about the shortcut. You can choose the Start Menu folder and title of the shortcut. If you don’t bother to change, it will be automatically installed in the same disk as step 3 and the title is Toolwiz Smart Defrag FREE. After you finish, click Next to continue;
5: Setup is now ready to begin installing Toolwiz Smart Defrag on your computer. Click Install to continue with the installation, or click Back if you want to review or change any settings;
6: Congratulations, finally you succeed in the installation. What’s left is to find the Start Menu folder to open and run Toolwiz Smart Defrag. A special experience is waiting for you.

"How to uninstall?"

  • Open the Start Menu folder, along with the SmartDefrag.exe, there is an Unins000.exe below. Double-click it, then you can uninstall it. It is always available to you, but we sincerely hope that with the perfect performance of Toolwiz Smart Defrag, you will never remember to use it.
  • Or you can uninstall it from your computer by using the Add/Remove Program feature in the Window's Control Panel. On the Start menu (for Windows 8, right-click the screen's bottom-left corner), click Control Panel, and then, underPrograms, do one of the following: Windows Vista/7/8: Click Uninstall a Program. Windows XP: Click Add or Remove Programs. When you find the program Toolwiz Smart Defrag, click it, and then do one of the following: Windows Vista/7/8: Click Uninstall.  Windows XP: Click the Remove or Change/Remove tab (to the right of the program). Follow the prompts. A progress bar shows you how long it will take to remove Toolwiz Smart Defrag.

"How Disk Defragmentation Works?"

A good defragmenter will also include an algorithm for smart file placement that utilizes the knowledge of faster and slower data access zones on the hard drive. Let’s take a closer look at these aspects of disk defragmentation.

  • File Defragmentation

    In simple terms, file defragmentation is the process of putting file pieces back together. What disk defragmenters do is re-write files into contiguous blocks of free space making sure that all file fragments are written in a consecutive order. This way the hard drive's read-write head has to go to one location to access the requested file instead of having to gather file pieces all over the drive.

  • Free Space Defragmentation

    Defragmentation, or consolidation, of the free space on a hard drive is one of the most effective fragmentation prevention techniques. When free space is in large contiguous blocks instead of scattered around the hard drive in smaller sections, new files that get written to the hard drive can be easily placed in one piece. When rewriting files during disk defragmentation, defraggers try to place all files closer together so that the remaining free space is consolidated into larger sections.

  • Smart File Placement

    Knowing how a hard drive operates and how data is stored and accessed on it, you can more easily understand the theory behind smart file placement. There are actually more than a few ways files can be placed on a hard drive with the intent of improving system performance. Different defragmenters may use different techniques or algorithms for placing files, some offering a choice of algorithms a user may pick to match their individual PC usage style. Defragmenters may try to keep together the files that are normally accessed together, such as a group of .dll files needed when an application is launched. This greatly reduces the amount of work the HDD's read-write head needs to do to when these files are requested. Placing system files to the fast outer tracks of the hard drive reduces the time it takes for your system to start up, as well as for applications to launch. This fast zone on the hard drive can also be used to place most frequently accessed files improving the speed of everyday tasks. At the same time, moving rarely used files to the back of the drive (the slower inner tracks) ensures they are out of the way and don't take up valuable free space in the fast zone.

As you can see, disk defragmentation is not just putting file fragments together, there is so much more to it. All of the various techniques used in defragmenters offer great potential for improvement of system speed and performance. People who proclaim that defragmentation is not needed with modern hard drives may not have tried a modern defragmenter with a powerful optimization engine. Anyone who uses their PC a lot, editing, saving and deleting files, installing and uninstalling software, playing computer games or working on long-term school projects will definitely notice an improvement in their computer's performance after using feature-rich defragmentation software on it. As they say, seeing is believing. Try defragmenting and optimizing your hard drive to see what difference it can make in your PC's performance.
